Detailed Day-by-Day Itinerary
We depart early from Gondar and drive around 2.5 hours to Debark to get permission to enter Simien National Park. We then drive 22km further to the Simien Lodge. From here we walk about 3-4 hours, admiring the amazing views of the escarpment and seeing friendly gelada baboons and a variety of plants.
Overnight: Sankaber camp (3250m)
The hike from Sankaber to Geech camp takes about 5-6 hours through spectacular scenery. We might see a klipspringer, Menelik's bushbuck, or even a leopard. Along the way, we pass the 500m high Jinbar waterfall and stop for lunch. We'll also visit Geech village for coffee with a local family in their traditional hut.
Overnight: Geech camp (3600m)
A 7-8 hour trek, this is the best route in the Simiens. We visit Imet Gogo (3926m) for incomparable 360-degree views. We then descend to a valley and climb again to Enatye (4070m), the highest point of the day's trek, before descending to Chennek. This area is home to many gelada baboons and is a great place to spot the endemic Walia Ibex.
Overnight: Chennek camp (3600m)
Today we trek from Chennek camp to Ras Buwahit peak and return, a hike of about 5-6 hours total. At 4430m, Ras Buwahit is the second highest peak in the Simien mountains. We may see Walia Ibex and have a chance of spotting the rare, endemic Ethiopian wolf. After time at the peak, we descend back to camp.
Overnight: Chennek camp (3600m)
After a final morning walk around the Chennek campsite to enjoy the views and look for wildlife, our vehicle will meet us to drive back to Gondar, concluding our incredible Simien Mountains adventure.
