he Karo tribes living along the borders of the lower Omo River incorporate rich, cultural symbolism in to their rituals by using ornate body art, intricate headdresses, and body scarification to express beauty and significance within their community. This lively tribe of around 2000 people is the main sedentary agriculturalist group in the lower Omo valley area of southern Ethiopia.
Beside the Hamer bull jumping ceremony is also an important feature of the Karo people. They called the ceremony the ‘Pilla’. More than other people of the Omo valley, body painting and scarification characterize the Karo people. In this regard, the facial and chest paintings are their most beautiful symbolic and ornamental expressions. The Karo are also famous in their traditional dance. At the times of imitation and marriage, they came together to enjoy the seduction of dance which led them to marriage.
