Abijatta and shalla National park far from Addis Ababa about 207 kilometers (129 miles) and this National park were established in the 1970 to conserve the wetland birds that is habited both lakes. Lake Shalla is the deepest lake in the Rift valley, while Lake Abijatta is the shallowest.
The scenery of this national park is notable for the lava caves, hot spring, and high diversity of bird life and mammals. The highest peak in this National park is mount Fike, which is situated between abijatta and shalla lakes and is a perfect vantage point to view the scenery of both lakes and their associated ecology all at once. The vegetation of the park is typically characterized by savannah grassland with some pure grassland occurring near lake shores and gallery forests along the river.
Abijatta –shalla national park covered an area of 176 square kilometers (43,491 acres), Lake Abijatta is an alkaline sandy –colored shallow body of water characterized by diverse phyto and zoo-planktons as well as fish and lakeshore arthropods. This has made the lake an ideal feeding ground for 400 species of diving soaring and wading dependent birds.
