Ethiopia (formerly called Abyssinia) is the oldest independent and proud nation in Africa and one of the oldest Christian nations in the world.

Lalibela, home to eleven monolithic rock-hewn churches – the largest in the world – is one of Ethiopia’s holiest cities and a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Gondar is known for the 17th century walled Fasil Ghebbi fortress and palace, once the seat of Ethiopian emperors, and the Debre Berhan Selassie church.

Bahir Dar, in Ethiopia’s northern Amhara region, is famous for the beautiful monasteries and churches that populate the 37 islands of Lake Tana, many of which are accessible by boat.

Harar, known for mazelike alleys and traditional houses, is a holy Islamic city that is surrounded by a centuries-old defensive wall, has many mosques, and is decorated with flat hanging baskets.

Hawzen is a town located in the Misraqawi Zone of the Tigray Region, northern Ethiopia and is the best place to stay to visit the nearby rock-hewn churches.
